The large wholesale Fish Market was built in 1929. During this period Molfetta’s fishing fleet was one of the more largest in the Adriatic Sea. Its sea routes then touched Tunisia, Albania, Greece, Egypt and Turkey. Owing to the large amount of fish coming from the port of Molfetta as well as from the ports of the neighboring cities, it was decided that the Fish Market should be built. The fish are auctioned off and sales begin in the dead of the night, in a clatter of chaotic shouting. The auctioneers, who have a language all of their own, made up of strictly dialectical expressions and ritual gestures, transform the moment of the sale into a show. Together with the fishing vessel owner, each auctioneer sets the prices and sparks off a frenetic activity. The buyers as well, must know the magic code in order to take part in the sale. Everything will draw to an end at dawn’s early light.
