The Basilica della Madonna dei Martiri[ Basilica of Our Lady of Martyrs] is 2 km away from the historical center of the city. A first group was constituted in the eleventh century by the church dedicated to St. Mary and by a Benedictine monastery. In 1162, a Romanesque church was built in its place. Only a small portion of the latter remains, consisting of the presbytery of the current building. In the nineteenth century. the structure was modernized. It is divided into three naves of two rows of Corinthian columns. The church is barrel-vaulted and richly decorated in a neoclassical style. On the side walls, 5 polychrome marble altars were implemented. The panel with the Madonna della Tenerezza[Our Lady of Tenderness] painting is on the main altar. It is a Byzantine style icon that came from the sea. In the right aisle, there is the papier maché statue of Our Lady of Martyrs made by Giuseppe Verzella and carried in the procession at sea on September 8. Worth visiting are the two paintings of Nicola Porta “The Visitation” and “St. Joseph’s Transit”, as well as the Way of the Cross made by the contemporary artist Vito Zaza.
