The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Afflitti (Church of the Saint Mary of the Afflicted), also known as the Church of the Purgatory, is the seat of the Arciconfraternita della Morte dal Sacco Nero (Archconfraternity of the Black Bag Death). Founded in 1643, the facade of the church, in calcareous stone, is characterized by the presence of 4 niches with the statues of Saint Stephen, Saint Peter the Apostle, Saint Paul and Saint Lawrence. On the portal of the broken eardrum, there is a relief of the souls that are in purgatory. Inside, there is a single nave with side chapels. In a metal and polycarbonate casing, the papier-mâché statues of Giulio Cozzoli, the ones used for the procession of Holy Saturday, are preserved inside the church: St. Peter, Veronica, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Cleophas, Mary Salome, St. John and the Mercy group. The statue of the Suffering Mary, made by the same sculptor and carried during the Good Friday procession, is also preserved here.
